Former Home Improvement Star Zachery Ty Bryan Receives 16-Month Jail Sentence
Zachery Ty Bryan, the former child star best known for playing Brad Taylor on the ABC sitcom Home Improvement, has been sentenced to 16 months in jail. This follows his guilty plea to felony driving under the influence and a misdemeanor for alleged contempt of court in California.
Details of the Sentencing and Legal Proceedings
Bryan, now 44 years old, was sentenced on Monday after striking a plea deal with prosecutors at the Larson Justice Center. Court records reveal that he pleaded guilty to the DUI charge and admitted to an enhancement related to having two prior DUI convictions. In addition to the jail term, he was denied probation and has 57 days of jail credit, meaning he will serve over 14 months of his sentence.
The arrest occurred in February 2024 when deputies from the La Quinta Sheriff's Station conducted a traffic stop in La Quinta, California. Sergeant Wendy Brito-Gonzalez stated that deputies observed signs of impairment during the stop, leading to Bryan's arrest for driving under the influence with prior convictions. He was subsequently booked into a Riverside County jail.
A String of Legal Troubles Over Five Years
This sentencing is the latest in a series of legal issues for Bryan, who has been arrested six times in the past five years. As a father of eight, his troubles extend beyond this case. He is due in court in Lane County, Oregon, on March 2 for a probation violation hearing connected to a domestic violence conviction from July 2023.
In that incident, Bryan was arrested in Eugene, Oregon, following a report of a physical dispute. He faced charges including Assault in the Fourth Degree APA, third-degree robbery, and misdemeanor harassment. Later, in November 2025, he was arrested again for violating probation from that conviction, with his fiancée, Johnnie Faye Cartwright, also arrested and booked. Bryan denied the violation at his arraignment in December.
Cartwright, 32, has pleaded not guilty to charges including driving under the influence, recklessly endangering another person, and reckless driving.
Career Background and Public Recognition
Bryan rose to fame as a child actor on Home Improvement, which aired from 1991 to 1999. His career also included roles in television shows like Veronica Mars and Smallville, as well as films such as First Kid and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Despite his early success, his recent years have been marred by ongoing legal challenges and arrests.
The Independent has reached out to Bryan's representatives for comment on the sentencing and his current situation, but no response has been provided at this time.
