Jillian Lauren Shriner, the author and campaigner married to Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, has officially filed for divorce, mere months after a dramatic confrontation with Los Angeles police where she allegedly racked a firearm at officers. The separation papers were submitted on Tuesday, marking a potential end to their marriage which began in 2005.
Divorce Details and Custody Battle
Legal documents obtained by outlet TMZ reveal that Lauren cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. She is reportedly seeking spousal support while also requesting the court to prevent her husband from claiming financial support from her. The future of their two children, aged 17 and 13, is also a central point, with Lauren asking for joint legal and physical custody. It remains unclear whether the couple had a prenuptial agreement in place, and neither party has publicly commented on the filing.
The April Police Confrontation
The divorce filing follows a highly publicised incident on 8 April 2025. Los Angeles Police Department officers, in pursuit of hit-and-run suspects, entered Lauren's Eagle Rock neighbourhood. Bodycam footage showed Lauren, unrelated to the chase, exiting her home armed with a gun while wearing a Weezer t-shirt.
Officers repeatedly commanded her to "put the gun down." After approximately two minutes of negotiations, one officer warned, "You're going to get shot. It's the police... It's California Highway Patrol." The situation escalated when Lauren racked the weapon directly at the officers, prompting them to open fire. She was struck in the shoulder by a police bullet.
Legal Repercussions and Health Struggles
Lauren was initially arrested and held on a $1 million bond for the attempted murder of a police officer. These charges were later reduced to assault and negligent discharge of a firearm. In a significant turn, a judge granted her a mental health diversion, allowing her to avoid jail time provided she complies with specific conditions.
These conditions include a ban on owning firearms and a mandate to attend therapy. If she successfully completes the programme, all charges against her will be dropped. Notably, this confrontation occurred just weeks after Lauren had recovered from intensive cancer treatment, which involved two back-to-back surgeries, including a full hysterectomy, as she disclosed on social media.
