Melissa Gilbert has spoken publicly for the first time about the child sexual contact charges against her husband, Timothy Busfield, becoming emotional during an interview on Good Morning America.
The former Little House on the Prairie star told George Stephanopoulos that she believes Busfield is innocent. The actor and director was indicted in New Mexico on 4 February on four counts of criminal sexual contact of a child, relating to an alleged incident on the set of The Cleaning Lady in Albuquerque.
Gilbert, who married Busfield in 2013, said: 'I know this man in my bones. No one knows him better than I do. I trust him with my children's lives, with my grandchildren's lives, my nieces and nephews. He is an honourable, caring, generous human being.'
She acknowledged that their lives have been irrevocably changed by the allegations, stating: 'Our life as we knew it is done. We are grieving what we had. Even if he's exonerated, he will always be that guy.'
Busfield, known for his role on The West Wing, has maintained his innocence and is free pending trial.
