Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams has faced backlash on social media after using the phrase 'Netflix and chill' in a warning about an impending snowstorm. Adams, who left office on 1 January after dropping out of the 2025 mayoral race, posted the advice on X, urging residents to prepare for the storm and to 'plan to Netflix and chill for a few days'.
The comment, which is a well-known euphemism for sex, drew criticism from many who felt it was inappropriate. One respondent wrote, 'Sorry man can't be home reproducing because i still have to go to work bc the cost of living is egregious thanks tho'. Another said, 'Why do you keep on with this? No one is having kids in this economy'.
Several users reminded Adams that he is no longer mayor, with one saying, 'ICYMI we have a mayor. You can take a seat'. Another added, 'Dude, stop playing like you’re still mayor. Stop humiliating yourself'. However, some found humour in the post, with one user commenting, 'From snowstorm warning to baby boom forecast in one tweet. Elite transition'.
The storm prompted new Mayor Zohran Mamdani to declare a local state of emergency. Non-essential vehicles are banned from city streets from 9 p.m. Sunday to 12 p.m. Monday. Subways remain running, but Long Island Rail Road services are suspended from Sunday evening. Schools are closed on Monday, and warming centres are open across the city.
Mamdani said in a statement, 'The safety of New Yorkers is my top priority. As this blizzard moves in, our administration is mobilising every tool at our disposal, around the clock, to keep our neighbours safe'.
