Eddie Redmayne Resumes Filming Following £1,530 Speeding Penalty
Eddie Redmayne was spotted back at work on the set of his new television series this Wednesday, marking his first public appearance since being issued a £1,530 court bill for breaking London's 20mph speed limit. The 44-year-old Oscar-winning actor was captured by a speed camera driving his Audi at 28mph along the A4 through Earl's Court at approximately 11am on October 14 last year.
Legal Proceedings and Consequences
Redmayne admitted to being the speeding driver but submitted the necessary form to the police too late to avoid criminal prosecution. At a private court hearing last Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined £1,000. In addition to the fine, he received three penalty points on his driving licence and was ordered to pay £130 in costs along with a £400 victim surcharge, bringing the total court bill to £1,530.
The actor, who won an Academy Award in 2015 for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, did not attend Westminster Magistrates' Court as his case was handled through the Single Justice Procedure. According to court records, Redmayne responded on March 1 this year by signing a form acknowledging he was the driver on the day of the offence. However, a police official noted that his response arrived too late to qualify for an out-of-court disposal, leading to the prosecution.
Return to Filming in Budapest
Despite the legal setback, Redmayne returned to his professional duties on Wednesday, appearing in costume on the set of the second season of The Day of the Jackal in Budapest. He was dressed in a beige coat and glasses, accompanied by a group of extras during filming. The new season is expected to shoot across multiple locations, including London, Budapest, and Croatia, continuing the cat-and-mouse thriller narrative from the first season, which also starred Lashana Lynch.
Context of London's 20mph Speed Limits
The incident occurred on the A4 Cromwell Road, which became a 20mph zone in Autumn 2023 as part of Kensington and Chelsea Council's initiative, announced in 2020, to introduce 20mph limits on all residential roads. Redmayne was among 450 motorists prosecuted by the Metropolitan Police last week for violating one of London's 20mph zones, with court fines ranging from £40 to the maximum £1,000 penalty.
The Met provided evidence including an image of Redmayne's speeding Audi and stated that a notice of intended prosecution was sent to him on October 20, six days after the offence. This case highlights the strict enforcement of speed limits in London and the consequences for late responses to legal notices, even for high-profile individuals.
