Dubai Influencers Face Backlash Over Alleged Pet Abandonment During Conflict

Social media personalities based in Dubai have launched fierce denials after facing widespread condemnation for allegedly abandoning their pets while fleeing escalating tensions in the Middle East. The controversy has erupted as veterinary clinics across the United Arab Emirates report a significant increase in inquiries about euthanising animals, while re-homing organisations state they are being overwhelmed by owners seeking to leave pets behind.

High-Profile Cases Spark Outrage and Denials

The French Animal League ignited the firestorm by publishing a tweet specifically naming influencer Maddy Burciaga, claiming she had left her dog behind to flee to Mauritius. The organisation's post, which garnered over 1.9 million views, stated: "A dog would never abandon its human to save its own skin. Dogs are ready to cross through a war to stay with their humans. That's the entire difference between loyalty... and comfort." They concluded with the phrase "shame on her."

Ms Burciaga responded forcefully on her social media platforms, threatening legal action for defamation. "I would never abandon my dog; my dog is my baby, she's part of our family," she declared. "We didn't flee Dubai, we went on vacation for a few days to escape the anxiety-inducing atmosphere there. To use our vacation and the ongoing war to claim we abandoned our dog is very low." She emphasised that her life remains in Dubai and she plans to return to her pet, Maya.

Multiple Influencers Face Similar Allegations

Another influencer, Sarah Lopez, faced parallel accusations on social media regarding abandoning a cat. She denied ownership, claiming the animal was a stray she merely fed, and also threatened legal proceedings. "I don't own animals in Dubai - I rescue animals in Dubai," Ms Lopez stated. "I reserve the right to take legal action against anyone who threatens me with messages, insults me, or threatens my family."

The situation has drawn criticism from other public figures, including former Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattison, who was in Dubai when the conflict intensified. She posted: "Just a note... if you are abandoning your pets in Dubai – you didn't deserve that animal to begin with and I pray it finds a better home. Shameful."

Animal Welfare Crisis Unfolds in UAE

Behind the social media drama, a genuine animal welfare crisis is developing. K9 Friends Dubai, a dog re-homing group, reports being inundated with requests from owners wanting to relinquish pets and calls about abandoned puppies. Disturbing photographs of dogs tied to lamp posts have circulated online, highlighting the scale of the problem.

Claire Hopkins, a Dubai resident who volunteers with multiple animal organisations, revealed the severe pressures facing shelters. "Some pet owners are stressed and panicking," she explained. "There are dogs starting to be abandoned. The airlines aren't taking animals at the moment anyway as the flights are operating a very reduced service." She added that fundraising is particularly challenging due to strict regulations and the banning of platforms like GoFundMe in Dubai.

Most alarmingly, some veterinary clinics have received inquiries about euthanising healthy pets because owners are unwilling to navigate relocation costs or complex paperwork. "I'm sorry to say that vets have had inquiries about euthanasia, which is disgusting," Ms Hopkins stated. "Most vets would pass them on to the shelters, but we're already full."

The Gulf region has found itself caught in the crossfire of broader Middle Eastern conflicts, experiencing Iranian drone and missile strikes alongside regular air raid sirens. This environment has prompted some expatriates to depart quickly, creating difficult decisions regarding pet ownership. While influencers vehemently deny abandoning their animals, the broader trend of pet desertion appears to be a painful reality confronting the UAE's animal welfare community.
