Barney Walsh Banned from Driving for Six Months After Speeding

Gladiators presenter and Casualty star Barney Walsh has been handed a six-month driving ban after being caught exceeding a temporary speed limit on a motorway. The 28-year-old actor, known for his role as Cam Mickelthwaite on the BBC medical drama, was prosecuted for driving at 58mph in a 50mph zone on the M4 in South Gloucestershire.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

Barney Walsh did not attend the sentencing hearing at magistrates' court, with his lawyer Gwyn Lewis citing work commitments that had taken him out of England. Mr Lewis appeared on Walsh's behalf and informed the court that his client already had nine penalty points on his license, making a driving disqualification inevitable.

Chairwoman of the magistrates' bench Janis Sanders imposed the six-month ban and ordered Walsh to pay a fixed penalty notice of £72, a victim surcharge of £28, and prosecution costs of £85. Mr Lewis confirmed that Walsh is in a position to pay the fixed penalty within the required 28-day period.

Previous Driving Offences

This is not the first time Barney Walsh's driving has brought him before the courts. In March 2024, he was caught driving between 93mph and 95mph on the M4 near Swindon, Wiltshire. At that hearing, presiding magistrate Mark Baker criticized Walsh for not appearing in person, describing his absence as arrogant.

During the 2024 case, prosecutors from Wiltshire Police stated that officers had observed Walsh's 2023-plate Mercedes GLC 300 passing a manned camera on the M4 at 4:30 pm on March 6th. While police initially recorded his speed at 97mph, Walsh's legal team successfully argued that he was driving between 93mph and 95mph.

Penalty Points Accumulation

For the 2024 offence, Walsh received a reduced fine of £1,000 (down from the potential maximum of £2,500) and was given five penalty points on his license. This brought his total to eight points at the time. Under UK driving regulations, accumulating twelve or more points within a three-year period typically results in license disqualification.

In addition to the fine, Walsh was ordered to pay £490 in court costs for the 2024 offence, with payment required within 28 days. The recent speeding violation has now resulted in the six-month driving ban that will prevent him from getting behind the wheel until late 2026.

The actor's legal representative emphasized that Walsh has been instructed not to drive following the court's decision. The combination of previous penalty points and the latest speeding violation has culminated in this significant driving prohibition for the television personality.
