Wagamama reinvents fish and chips as ramen for Gen Z

Restaurant chain wagamama is giving the British classic fish and chips an Asian-inspired makeover, launching a limited-edition ramen version from October 7. The dish swaps the traditional chip-shop paper for a ramen bowl, featuring the chain's signature noodles in a rich curry broth, topped with tempura-battered hake, crispy sweet potato chips and crushed edamame, finished with fresh pea shoots, coriander and chilli.

Gen Z turning away from traditional dishes

The launch follows research from wagamama suggesting younger diners are increasingly turning away from traditional British dishes in favour of more globally inspired flavours. More than half of 14 to 29-year-olds consider traditional British meals dated, while less than half (48%) have eaten fish and chips at the seaside.

While the dish remains a favourite among older generations, more than half of Gen Z (51%) feel traditional British meals are dated. For decades, the Friday night fish supper reigned supreme, but for a generation raised on global street food, delivery apps and bold flavours, the traditional chippy tea may not hold the same nostalgic appeal, research suggests.

Chef defends fusion twist

Steve Mangleshot, Global Executive Chef and Brand Ambassador at wagamama, said: “Innovation sits at the heart of the wagamama bench. Fusion food and ‘Brit-ish’ nostalgia is a major market trend guests love when executed with playfulness and quality.”

“We wanted to deliver something genuinely fun and unexpected for October, welcoming everyone to pull up a bench and join the debate - regardless of whether they consider it a masterpiece or madness.”
