UK Eurovision Entry Makes Candid Admission About Sleep Deprivation
The United Kingdom's representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, known as Look Mum No Computer, has openly confessed to "missing the concept of sleep" during the demanding preparations for the international competition. This admission comes shortly after the recent birth of his son, adding a personal layer to his professional challenges.
Personal Challenges Amid Professional Demands
Sam Battle, the YouTube sensation behind the stage name, shared his current situation with the Press Association at the London Eurovision Party held at Outernet in Tottenham Court Road. "Everything happens at once, which is kind of mad and it's a lot of work," Battle explained. "I mean, my son is seven days old now, and I've got to be honest, I've missed the concept of sleep." This heartfelt revelation highlights the balancing act between family life and high-pressure performance commitments.
Handcrafted Staging for Vienna Performance
In a testament to his DIY ethos, Battle disclosed that he has personally constructed the majority of the staging for his upcoming performance in Vienna, Austria. The Lincolnshire-born musician will perform his track "Eins, Zwei, Drei" on this custom-built set. However, he noted that the BBC did not permit him to handle all aspects, particularly the welding, due to safety concerns. "I didn't think the BBC trusted my welding," he remarked, though he confirmed creating all the electronics and panels himself.
The timing of this project was exceptionally tight. Battle finished building the props merely two hours before accompanying his wife to the hospital for the birth of their child. "So I built props, and it's already in Vienna now," he said. "I mean, it's on a big lorry to Vienna, whether it's got there already, I'm yet to find out." This anecdote underscores the frantic pace of his pre-contest schedule.
Approaching Eurovision with Unique Style
Known for his innovative videos featuring unusual electronic music equipment, Battle emphasized that he plans to tackle Eurovision in his distinctive manner. "I will be doing Eurovision my own way and hoping for the best," he stated, reflecting his independent artistic spirit. He admitted to feeling uncertain about the experience, saying, "I didn't know what to expect one bit to be honest, so it's a surprise every day."
Battle expressed astonishment at the scale of the London event, noting, "Today I've turned up, I've just woke up and drove here, and now we're all talking, and there's more people than I ever imagined." He anticipates an even larger audience in Vienna, adding to the excitement and pressure of the competition.
Background and Creative Achievements
Since launching his YouTube career in 2013, Look Mum No Computer has garnered significant online popularity, accumulating over 85 million views and 1.4 million combined subscribers and followers across various social media platforms. His creative projects have included:
- Constructing an organ from Furby toys
- Fusing a synthesiser with a Raleigh Chopper bicycle
- Building a triple oscillator synthesiser using Nintendo Game Boy consoles
The music video for his Eurovision song depicts him in a chaotic office environment wearing a suit, before he transitions to a giant electronic soundboard, symbolically singing about "coming back to life." This visual narrative aligns with his reputation for blending technology and music in unconventional ways.
