Taylor Swift has released a music video for her song 'Elizabeth Taylor', available exclusively on Apple Music and Spotify Premium for now. The video pays tribute to the legendary actress by compiling scenes from her films and newsreel footage, rather than featuring Swift herself.
The clip includes moments from classic movies such as 'Cleopatra', 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof', and 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?', among others. This approach mirrors the strategy used for Swift's previous video 'Opalite', which later became available on YouTube's free tier.
Swift obtained permission from Elizabeth Taylor's estate before releasing the song, which appears on her album 'The Life of a Showgirl'. The lyrics reference Taylor's violet eyes, her fragrance White Diamonds, and her favourite locations like Portofino and the Plaza Athénée hotel.
In interviews, Swift has explained that the song uses Taylor's life as a lens to explore her own experiences with fame. She was inspired after learning that Taylor's son compared her to his mother, and she quickly wrote the melody after discussing it with Travis Kelce.
The video ends with a thank you to the Elizabeth Taylor Trust and the Todd and Wilding families. Taylor's grandson, Quinn Tivey, expressed that the family loves the song and believes Taylor would have enjoyed it.
