Sonny Fodera has spoken about his friendship with Steven Gerrard, describing the former Liverpool captain as an "absolute legend" who loves house music. The Australian DJ met Gerrard at Amnesia in Ibiza, where the midfielder was in attendance with former Reds star Harry Kewell.
In an exclusive interview with the ECHO on site at Creamfields, ahead of his headline set that closed out the festival, Fodera said Gerrard is now a regular at Pacha in Ibiza. He added: "He's very lowkey and he never comes in the booth. I'm always like, 'Come in the booth'. But he won't do it. It's crazy because I grew up watching him."
Full Circle Moment at Creamfields
Closing the Arc stage marked a full circle moment for the 29-year-old, who first performed at the festival in Daresbury. He said: "I started here doing a silent disco to like 1500 people. To come here, work my way up and to close the Arc stage and close the festival is insane."
The 2026 edition marked 20 years since Creamfields moved away from its original location in Liverpool. Fodera said the city was one of the first in the UK to recognise his music, adding: "It's where 'You & I' popped off and my track, 'To Love', I feel like it really started there."
Surreal Meeting with Gerrard
Fodera first met Gerrard on the day he watched the Amazon Prime documentary on the midfielder's career, Make Us Dream. He recalled: "It's quite funny, when I first met him I actually watched the documentary that day. And then he came to the show and I was like, 'What?' I was like, 'Bro, I've just seen you on the plane' coming here and now you're at my show."
Fodera also highlighted the Liverpool crowd's enthusiasm for his music, saying: "You guys know all my records. Even songs I wouldn't even think [are that popular], I play them in Liverpool and everyone knows the words. It's unreal. You guys just love house music."
Arena Tour in 2027
After closing Creamfields with a firework display, Fodera is set to embark on a major arena tour next year, including a date at Manchester's Co-Op Live on March 26. He said: "I'm doing an arena tour, which is coming near you guys. I'm doing that in Manchester, also the 02 Arena in London, the OVO Hydro and Newcastle's arena. It's all go in 2027."
