Pop star Hirata Runa, who performed under the stage name Luna-chan, died on Friday, September 25, at the age of eight. The news came just five days after her final performance with the DIANNA Project, a girl-group trainee scheme based in Nagoya, Japan.
Her agency confirmed the death, stating she passed away at around 4am after suffering myocarditis linked to influenza. Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle, but no further medical details or treatment history have been disclosed.
Agency confirms death and funeral details
In an official statement, the agency said: "We regret to announce that Runa Hirata, a Nagoya trainee with the DIANNA Project, has passed away due to myocarditis associated with an influenza infection. We also report that, in accordance with the wishes of her bereaved family, the wake and funeral were held with only close relatives in attendance. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the fans who have supported Runa Hirata, as well as everyone involved who has provided their support."
The agency also appealed for privacy, adding: "Out of consideration for the feelings of the bereaved family, we respectfully ask that people refrain from making individual enquiries or media requests regarding this matter, or posting questions on social media."
Final performance and family tribute
Her death came as a surprise to fans, as less than a week beforehand she had appeared well while performing at the DIA'sNNA Project regular Live Vol.70 concert on September 20. After the show, she posted a cheerful social media message: "Thank you again today. It was so much fun. I hope the people in part three have fun too."
Her family also shared a tribute through her official account, writing: "We are sorry to have to bring you this sudden news. Runa Hirata passed away at around 4am on September 25. We are sincerely grateful to the idol colleagues who were close to Runa during her lifetime, the fans who supported Runa, everyone at the agency who helped make Runa an idol, and everyone who was connected with Runa."
They added: "One third of Runa’s life was spent as an idol. Runa loved everyone very much. If possible, please allow her to remain in a corner of your hearts as an eternal idol. On her behalf, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks. Thank you very much for everything until now."
