Oasis join global stars at Scottish football stadiums

Oasis are set to bring their reunion tour to Celtic Park next year, with brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher opening their run of shows at Parkhead on May 21 before returning on May 23, 25, 28 and 29. The huge run of dates will see thousands of fans descend on Glasgow to see the Britpop icons - but Oasis are far from the first global superstars to perform at a Scottish football stadium.

From Prince and The Who at Celtic Park to Frank Sinatra at Ibrox, some of the world's biggest music stars have previously swapped the pitch for the stage.

Celtic Park's concert history

Celtic Park has a long history of hosting huge concerts, with some of the world's biggest names performing there over the decades. The Who were among the first, playing the stadium in 1976 as part of their stadium tour. The gig was a full-day event, with the stage set up in the main stand and fans standing on the playing field.

The concert got underway at around 2pm, with The Who not taking to the stage until around 8pm. The legendary rock group were joined on the bill by the Alex Harvey Band, Streetwalkers, the Outlaws and Little Feat.

More than 15 years later, Celtic Park welcomed another global superstar when Prince performed at the stadium on June 28, 1992. The Purple Rain hitmaker was in Glasgow as part of his Diamonds & Pearls tour, with Carmen Electra and Shakespeare's Sister among the support acts. More than 35,000 people turned out to watch Prince perform at Parkhead.

Ibrox and Falkirk Stadium

Across Glasgow in Ibrox Stadium, there has also been several performances by some of the biggest names in music. Frank Sinatra performed at the home of Rangers in July 1990, with the legendary singer taking to the stage at 8.10pm for an 83 minute set. The spectacle saw him sing iconic tracks such as Strangers in the Night, New York, New York, Mack The Knife, My Way and The Lady Is a Tramp.

More than 30 years later, Harry Styles brought his Love On Tour show to Ibrox on June 11, 2022. The Glasgow date was particularly significant as it marked the opening night of Styles' 2022 tour and was the first live concert to be held at Ibrox in almost two decades.

Falkirk Stadium has also attracted some major names, with Elton John and Rod Stewart among the stars to have performed at the venue. The Killers later made their mark on the stadium when they played two consecutive nights in June 2022 as part of their Imploding the Mirage Tour. More than 20,000 fans attended each night, setting a record for the largest crowds ever recorded for a concert at the venue. Blossoms supported the band on the first night, while Supergrass took to the stage before them on the second.

The second show also produced a memorable moment for one local fan, when Kyle Grieve was invited on stage to play drums during the track For Reasons Unknown. He had held up a sign reading "Tonight I mean business" before being brought up to perform with the band.

Pittodrie and McDiarmid Park

Aberdeen's Pittodrie Stadium has also welcomed some major musical names over the years. Elton John performed at the home of Aberdeen FC in June 2004, the tour date was significant as it was his only Scottish concert performance during that leg of his world tour - The Elton John Tour 2024.

The singer has actually performed at more Scottish football stadiums than most, with his shows also taking place at Easter Road, Rugby Park, Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, McDiarmid Park, Falkirk Stadium and Excelsior Stadium.

St Johnstone's McDiarmid Park has also welcomed a global star, with Lionel Richie performing at the Perth stadium in 2018. The All Night Long hit maker was performing as part of his 'All the Hits' tour. The gig saw around 16,000 fans take to the stadium to watch Lionel perform his biggest hits.
