It has been a quarter of a century since they last topped the charts. But former Spice Girl Mel C was in Glasgow yesterday to sign copies of her new album, Sweat.
The 52-year-old met fans at the HMV store in the city’s Argyle Street where crowds of fans came to have their albums signed and have their photos taken with her.
Sweat is Mel C’s ninth studio album and is described as ‘a euphoric, high-energy record that captures the freedom, unity and escapism of the dancefloor’.
Mel C, real name Melanie Chisholm, was known as ‘Sporty Spice’ in 1990s pop group The Spice Girls, who sold more than 100 million records worldwide. She began her solo career in late 1998 on the single ‘When You’re Gone’ with Canadian rock singer Bryan Adams.
The last time The Spice Girls had a UK number-one single was the double A-side ‘Holler’ / ‘Let Love Lead the Way,’ released in October 2000.
She has won various awards including three World Music Awards, five Brit Awards, three American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, three MTV Europe Music Awards, and one MTV Video Music Award.
In 2009, she made her stage debut in the West End musical Blood Brothers, for which she was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award.
Mel C will also return to Glasgow on October 20 to perform at the Barrowland Ballroom as part of her upcoming world tour.
