Shakespears Sister singer Marcella Detroit, 73, was unmasked as Gargoyle on The Masked Singer on Saturday January 17. She lost the sing-off to Sloth during the fourth episode of series seven on ITV.
After being unmasked, Detroit told host Joel Dommett: 'I have had an incredible time, the people, except you, the people have been so nice and wonderful, and you’re so cute. And you’re all great, I mean thank you.'
As Gargoyle, she performed Joan Jett’s Bad Reputation in the sing-off, while Sloth sang Flash, Bang, Wallop from the 1967 film Half A Sixpence. The episode concluded with Detroit singing Shakespears Sister’s 1992 hit Stay.
Speaking after leaving the show, the American singer said: 'I’m really sad to go. It’s been an incredible experience. Everyone has been so nice and so much fun. Very helpful, really kind.' She added that her British husband had wanted to return to England, and the offer came at the perfect time.
Shakespears Sister, formed by Detroit and former Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey, achieved three UK top 10 singles including the number one Stay, and two top 10 albums. Other hits include You’re History, I Don’t Care and Hello (Turn Your Radio On).
The episode featured a 'Spooktacular' theme, with host Joel Dommett in a Wednesday Addams-style outfit and judges Maya Jama, Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan and Jonathan Ross in spooky costumes. Guest judge Ben Shephard dressed as a scarecrow. The Masked Singer returns next Saturday at 7pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
