Madonna has announced the release of her 15th studio album, Confessions II, a sequel to her 2005 disco-fabulous album Confessions on a Dance Floor. The new album will be released on 3 July and reunites her with British producer Stuart Price, who also worked on the original.
In a statement, Madonna described the album's concept: 'When Stuart Price and I first started working on this record, this was our manifesto: We must dance, celebrate, and pray with our bodies... The dance floor is a ritualistic space. It’s a place where you connect with your wounds, with your fragility.' She also quoted a new song, One Step Away, which includes the line: 'The dancefloor is not just a place, it’s a threshold: A ritualistic space where movement replaces language.'
A teaser of new music released on YouTube features a deep house track with Madonna speaking: 'Thanks for coming. Sometimes, I like to just hide in the shadows, create a new persona... Honestly I wish I could be like other people and just not care, but out here on the dancefloor I feel so free.'
The album marks a return to nightclub music, following her recent forays into pop, R&B, and hip-hop on albums like Hard Candy and Rebel Heart, and the eclectic Madame X. The original Confessions on a Dance Floor restored Madonna to global mega-popularity, with lead single Hung Up reaching number one in 41 countries.
Since 2019's Madame X, Madonna has revisited her back catalogue with releases like Veronica Electronica and Bedtime Stories: The Untold Chapter. She also collaborated on the track Popular with the Weeknd and Playboi Carti, and survived a serious bacterial infection in 2023 before embarking on the Celebration tour, which concluded with a concert for 1.6 million people in Rio de Janeiro.
