Lorde halted her headline set at Lollapalooza in Chicago after multiple fans reportedly lost consciousness in the crowd during a blistering heatwave.
The 29-year-old New Zealand singer was headlining in Grant Park when soaring temperatures led to several medical emergencies among concertgoers packed near the front of the stage. According to NBC Chicago, she stopped the show on at least three occasions to let security and medics reach fans who had reportedly passed out.
Pauses to help fans in distress
Witnesses said Lorde repeatedly called for assistance after spotting people in difficulty in the audience, bringing the performance to a temporary standstill as help moved through the crowd. Temperatures around the festival had reached roughly 90F (32C), with the city in the grip of intense summer heat.
Acknowledging the conditions as she took to the stage, Lorde - whose full name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor - told those gathered: 'You look hot from up here.'
Set resumes with hits and a surprise guest
Once the fans who needed care had been helped, Lorde picked the set back up, delivering a run of her biggest songs, including Royals, Green Light, Supercut and Ribs.
She also brought out fellow pop star Charli XCX for a surprise appearance, with the pair performing their fan-favourite collaboration Girl, So Confusing.
A long-awaited milestone
The performance was a significant moment for Lorde. She first appeared at Lollapalooza in 2014, but her scheduled 2017 headline slot was abandoned early when torrential rain forced festival organisers to evacuate the park before she could finish.
Speaking about finally completing the set, she said: 'Let's complete the circle from 2017 to 2014 to right now.'
Lorde has been on tour supporting her fourth studio album, Virgin, which came out last summer.
