Krishnacore, the 1990s punk subgenre that fused hardcore music with Krishna consciousness, is experiencing a revival through album reissues and reunion shows. The movement, which emerged as a counterpoint to punk's traditional rejection of religion, attracted a dedicated following and influenced bands worldwide.
Origins of Krishnacore
Ray "Raghunath" Cappo, former frontman of Youth of Today, pioneered the movement after a spiritual awakening. Following his father's death in 1988, Cappo explored various religious paths before traveling to India to become a monk. He found inspiration in the Bhagavad Gita, particularly the story of Arjuna, a warrior guided by Krishna toward his true duty.
Cappo formed Shelter in 1990, initially as a solo project, combining punk rock with Hare Krishna chants and Hindu iconography. The band, dubbed "Krishnacore" by some, signed to Roadrunner Records for their 1995 album Mantra, leading to festival appearances alongside Slayer and the reformed Sex Pistols.
108 and the Movement's Expansion
Shelter paved the way for similar acts, including the more intense 108, formed by Vic DiCara. Guitarist Kate Reddy described the band's approach as honest about the difficulties of spiritual practice. "It's a lot of hard work, dedication and self discipline," she said, noting the misconception that spiritual growth is a smooth process.
The movement spread globally, reaching Australia, Russia, and the Philippines. Chris Daly, drummer for 108 and later Texas Is the Reason, recalled touring with Shelter as a "travelling Krishna fest," complete with a converted school bus serving as a mobile temple.
Legacy and Contemporary Influence
While Krishnacore never achieved mainstream cut-through, its influence persists. Swear Down, a Kent-based "Hindu beatdown" act, cites Shelter and 108 as inspirations, with frontman Martin Grimwood incorporating his Shaivism beliefs into lyrics.
Today, Cappo and Reddy teach yoga, while Daly continues to tour with the re-formed Texas Is the Reason, whose 30th anniversary edition of Do You Know Who You Are is out via Revelation Records. Cappo will front both Youth of Today and Shelter on 18/19 November at the Dome, London.
