Actress Rose McGowan, who sparked the Harvey Weinstein scandal with her rape allegations, has branded the #MeToo movement as 'bull****' and its activists as 'douchebags' and 'losers'. In an interview with The Sunday Times Magazine, McGowan criticized the movement she helped ignite, saying it is a 'Band-Aid lie' that makes activists feel better without addressing Hollywood's true nature.
McGowan, who accused Weinstein of rape in October 2017, triggering a wave of allegations against powerful figures, expressed disdain for #MeToo campaigners. 'I just think they're douchebags. They're not champions. I just think they're losers. I don't like them,' she said. She also questioned why she received a GQ Man of the Year award but no support from women's organizations.
The actress also targeted Meryl Streep, claiming it is 'literally impossible' that Streep did not know about Weinstein's alleged behaviour. Streep has denied any prior knowledge. McGowan further stated that she understands why Donald Trump supporters hate Hollywood, calling its liberalism fake.
McGowan has previously distanced herself from both #MeToo and Time's Up, calling the latter's leadership 'fakes' and criticizing celebrities who wore black to the Golden Globes as 'Hollywood fakery'. She faces legal issues including a cocaine possession trial, which she claims was orchestrated by Weinstein, and a lawsuit from Asia Argento.
