Jessie J has spoken candidly about her breast cancer journey, revealing that the treatment left her feeling 'robbed' of precious time with her two-year-old son, Sky. The 37-year-old singer, who underwent a full mastectomy in June after doctors detected the disease early, shared her struggles in a podcast interview.
Speaking on Jamie Laing’s Great Company podcast, Jessie admitted the hardest part of the ordeal was being away from her child. 'Yesterday I sobbed. I feel like I can’t be a mum to my son and I miss him. I feel like cancer has robbed me of memories with my boy,' she said. She noted that her toddler grows quickly, making the missed moments especially painful.
The Price Tag singer recalled the shock of her diagnosis after finding a 4-5cm lump. Initially told it was likely a cyst, she 'burst into tears' when doctors confirmed it was cancer. Despite the fear, her last performance before surgery at Capital’s Summertime Ball gave her strength. 'When I was put to sleep for surgery, I replayed that moment in my head,' she said.
Jessie, who shares Sky with partner Chanan Safir Colman, said she broke down upon first seeing her scars but felt 'so happy to be alive'. Doctors confirmed she would not need chemotherapy or radiotherapy, though further operations are required to aid her recovery.
The experience has reshaped her outlook. 'Life is short. I want to write books, do a kids’ album, take my family on holiday,' she said. She added that her son has been the 'light of her life' throughout, keeping her motivated as she prepares to release new music.
