Jamie Bell has revealed that the sex scenes in Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac were a welcome break from the intense dialogue. The actor, who played an S&M dominator in the film, said the physicality of the scenes provided a respite from the heavy script.
Bell, best known for his breakout role in Billy Elliot, described his experience working with von Trier as intense and scary. He admitted feeling out of his depth and unprepared for the director's unconventional methods, which included minimal rehearsal and improvisation.
The actor recalled that he did not speak to co-star Charlotte Gainsbourg throughout the entire shoot. In his farewell speech, he told her: 'Charlotte, I have no idea who you are but I'm sure you're a lovely person. Maybe I'll see you another time.'
To prepare for his role, Bell visited a friend's sex shop in Los Angeles to familiarise himself with BDSM culture. He also received guidance from professionals on set, who taught him how to use whips and tie knots.
Despite the challenges, Bell said he was drawn to the project because of von Trier's reputation as one of the most experimental filmmakers alive. He described the role as a challenge he wanted to be part of, even though he had 'no idea how to do it'.
