A new biography of Freddie Mercury claims the Queen frontman had a secret daughter with whom he maintained a close relationship until his death in 1991. The book, titled Love, Freddie, alleges that the child was conceived accidentally during an affair with the wife of a close friend in 1976.
The daughter, referred to only as B, is now 48 and works as a medical professional in Europe. She has shared with biographer Lesley-Ann Jones 17 volumes of personal journals that Mercury gave her, which she kept secret for decades. In letters included in the book, B states that Mercury was her father and that they had a loving relationship throughout his life.
Mercury began writing the diaries on 20 June 1976, the day he learned of the pregnancy, and continued until 31 July 1991, as his health deteriorated. The journals chronicle his childhood in Zanzibar, his time at boarding school in India, and his family's move to Middlesex following the 1964 revolution.
Jones said she was approached by B three years ago and initially doubted the story but is now convinced of its authenticity. B explained her decision to come forward as a way to let Mercury speak for himself after decades of speculation.
