Thousands of Final Fantasy 14 fans gathered in Berlin over the weekend for Fan Fest, where director Naoki Yoshida announced new content including the Evercold expansion. For some attendees, the event was a chance to meet fellow players they had only known online.
Free Company bonds across Germany
The Technocore Free Company, led by a player known as Pia, brought members from across Germany to share an Airbnb and attend the convention. Most had never met in person before, though a few had met at Gamescom and Dokomi the previous year.
Pia inherited leadership from the founder, who recruited her with a message on her Adventure Plate: "No UWU-ing, penalty 350 gil." She recalled: "[The founder] also texted me and was like, 'Now that I have your attention, can I interest you in joining my Free Company?'"
Member Pascal joined because he didn't want to play alone, and Konny, Pia's boyfriend, was "abducted" into the game. Andreas found the group through a community finder page.
From virtual raids to real-life meetups
The group regularly plays together, including clearing the latest Savage tier. Andreas said: "Recently we cleared the last Savage tier, the eight S fight together. Pretty much everyone in the guild was in the static, and we managed to clear it together for the first time."
Pia cosplayed her character Felicity Pawter at the event. She also prepared a Y'shtola Rhul outfit for day two. Self-expression is important in the game, as highlighted by Yoshida's keynote announcing new customization options like horns and war paint.
Online authenticity carries into real life
When asked about meeting in person, Pia said: "For me personally, it just feels like a continuation. It doesn't feel any different, it's not as if he's a completely different person now than when we're playing together." Andreas agreed: "We knew people for a while, we knew their vibe. It's no different for me."
While some members live nearby, many are spread across Germany, with others in Switzerland who could not attend. Pia advised players looking for a community: "Do it. Just try it out. If you don't vibe with the people, that's okay. You can always find another group."
The next Final Fantasy Fan Fest is scheduled for Tokyo on October 31 and November 1.
