Devoted fans have been paying their respects by watching some of his most celebrated performances. The death of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star was announced recently, with his daughters Emily and Daisy stating: "He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family." They added: "It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many."
Tributes have been pouring in across social media, with admirers revisiting his acclaimed work in productions including Persuasion, Ted Lasso, and Vanity Fair. One fan wrote on Reddit: "It's a lovely tribute to remember artists for their work." Another replied: "My favourite was him in Merlin," to which another said: "He was incredible as Uther! So intimidating!" A fan agreed: "Right he was so good as Uther."
Anthony Head's Role as Uther Pendragon
The much-loved actor portrayed Uther Pendragon, King of Camelot, in the BBC fantasy series, alongside Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as Prince Arthur, and Richard Wilson as Gaius. Merlin ran for five series between 2008 and 2012, presenting a fresh reimagining of the legendary tale. In the show, a young warlock is dispatched to live with Gaius in Camelot after his mother fears his magical abilities put his life in danger. Working within the royal court, he takes on the role of Arthur's servant and dedicates his abilities to shielding him from dark forces. Across the years, the two forge a bond of deep trust, though Merlin conceals his magical powers from everyone while guiding Arthur towards fulfilling his destiny as King.
Viewers have praised Merlin as "spellbinding" and "one of the best," with one commenting: "The ending is heartbreaking and may leave you in an eternal sadness but it's worth it." Another remarked: "I love Merlin, from the 1st episode I knew this would be an excellent show." One fan called it "one of the best TV series of BBC," while another described it as "perfection." Someone else termed it "phenomenal," and another enthusiast labelled it "an epic masterpiece."
Anthony Head on Playing Uther
Anthony Head had previously discussed his appreciation for portraying his character in Merlin. In a 2010 interview, he explained: "He has so many levels, and that makes him fascinating. We established early on that he wasn't just a two-dimensional baddie, and now his past transgressions have manifested themselves, which is great fun to play." He added with humour: "I also get to wear the cloak and sword, which reminds me of dressing up as a knight when I was a child."
Merlin is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
