Oasis have said they are “shocked and saddened” after a man fell to his death at Wembley Stadium during the band’s Saturday concert. The man, aged in his 40s, was found with injuries consistent with a fall and pronounced dead at the scene.
The Metropolitan police said officers on duty for the concert responded to reports of an injured person at 10.19pm. The man is understood to have been sitting in the upper tier of the 90,000-seat stadium, whose highest stands are 50 metres above the ground. Police believe a number of people may have witnessed the incident or captured it on mobile phone video.
Oasis said in a statement: “We are shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of a fan at the show last night. Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved.” During the band’s Sunday Wembley gig, Liam Gallagher dedicated the track Live Forever “to all the people who can’t be here tonight”.
A fan who was sitting in a lower tier described the scene as “horrific”, saying she initially thought a coat had fallen but then saw the man on the concrete. Wembley Stadium said medics, the London ambulance service and police attended, but despite their efforts the fan sadly died. His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers.
The Oasis reunion tour marks the first time Liam and Noel Gallagher have performed together in 16 years. It includes seven shows at Wembley and five in Manchester, followed by dates in the US, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Australia and South America.
