First Listen: Madonna's Confessions II Is Dark, Danceable and Deeply Personal

Madonna's upcoming album Confessions II is set for release in July, and a select group of journalists—including this writer—were given an exclusive preview in a secret London location. Security was tight: phones were confiscated, and the address was disclosed only at the last moment to prevent leaks.

The album is the sequel to 2005's Confessions on a Dancefloor and marks her first LP since 2019's Madame X. Madonna has reunited with producer Stuart Price, who helmed the original. Price described the 67-year-old singer's relentless work ethic, with studio sessions often stretching until 3am. She would listen to the album while working out in the gym, returning with detailed notes and tweaks.

The sound is dark, house-oriented, with 'filthy basslines', designed as one continuous mix. While primarily a dance record, Price warns it is also her most candid in years, reflecting on personal loss—including the death of her brother, which inspired the track Fragile. Madonna nearly died in 2023 after a bacterial infection led to sepsis and a coma, adding depth to the album's vulnerability.

Price confirmed the album contains bona fide hits. After finishing one track, Madonna simply looked at him and said 'banger'. Highlights include I Feel So Free, Good for the Soul, Danceteria and Love Sensation. Sabrina Carpenter appears on the single Bring Your Love, following their Coachella duet. The pair connected directly via social media and flew to New York to record together. Price noted their immediate chemistry in the studio.

Madonna again samples a classic track: I Feel So Free incorporates Lil Louis's 1989 Chicago house anthem French Kiss. Price said tracking down the enigmatic artist for clearance was challenging, requiring persistent DMs. The album promises to be one of Madonna's most powerful works, blending dancefloor energy with raw emotional honesty.
