Veteran broadcaster Danny Kelly, 69, announced on Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. The talkSPORT presenter shared the news live during his show, revealing that he first sought medical advice six weeks ago for suspected acid reflux.
Kelly, who has been with talkSPORT since 2007, will take a break from broadcasting to undergo a lengthy treatment programme involving chemotherapy, surgery, and further chemotherapy. He expressed hope for recovery, noting that doctors have confirmed the cancer has not spread.
In his on-air statement, Kelly urged listeners, particularly men, to seek medical help if they notice something wrong. 'If you feel something just isn't right in your body... for God's sake, go to the doctor,' he said, emphasising the importance of early detection.
Kelly praised talkSPORT for their support, saying they have allowed him to decide when he is fit to broadcast. He plans to return to the airwaves, citing the positive impact on his mental health. 'It will help my mental health,' he said, adding that he needs something to look forward to.
The presenter, known for his Sunday show Trans-Europe Express and regular appearances on Hawksbee and Jacobs, thanked listeners for their support and asked for prayers and positive wishes during his treatment.
