Jon Bernthal is making a historic return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reprising his iconic role as Frank Castle, The Punisher, in a new Disney+ special that will set a runtime record for Marvel Studios.
Record-Breaking Runtime for Marvel Special
According to an official listing from the Writer's Guild of America, the upcoming untitled Punisher television special will run for a full 60 minutes. This makes it the longest special presentation ever produced by Marvel Studios, surpassing the previous records held by the 53-minute Werewolf By Night and the 42-minute Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, both released in 2022.
Continuation of Frank Castle's Story
The special, written by Bernthal himself alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green, will continue the gritty narrative established in the character's appearances in the Netflix series Daredevil and The Punisher. Bernthal will be joined by supporting actors Jason R. Moore, Roe Rancell, and Mila Jaymes, reprising their roles from the Netflix shows.
The project was conceived after Bernthal developed the idea while filming Daredevil: Born Again, the Disney+ series that premiered last year. The special was filmed during an intensive 12-day shoot in New York City last summer and is scheduled for release on Disney+ later this year.
Authentic and Dark Tone Promised
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, Bernthal assured fans that the hourlong special would remain true to the beloved anti-hero's dark and uncompromising nature, despite the transition from Netflix to Disney's platform.
"It's going to be dark," Bernthal emphasized. "Frank has no interest in breaking out the darkness. It's not going to be easy. I don't know if that's the Netflix tone then that's what it's going to be. It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that."
Theatrical Debut in Spider-Man Film
In addition to the Disney+ special, Bernthal will make his theatrical debut as Frank Castle in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, which hits cinemas in July. The film will feature a dramatic showdown between Spider-Man and The Punisher.
Bernthal revealed that the special is timed to release around the same period as the Spider-Man film, creating a synergistic Marvel event. "Around that same time, there will also be this Punisher special that's coming out, that I think will be as high-octane Punisher as you've ever seen," he told ScreenRant in December.
He added, "I think what was really important to me and to Destin [Daniel Cretton] and to Tom [Holland] is that we believed that The Punisher could walk off of the Spider-Man set and could walk onto the special set, and I do believe that we achieved that."
Background and Legacy
Jon Bernthal, known for his role in The Walking Dead, first portrayed The Punisher in season two of Netflix's Daredevil before headlining his own self-titled spinoff series. His return marks a significant moment for Marvel fans, blending the character's established Netflix legacy with new Disney+ and theatrical ventures.
This dual release strategy highlights Marvel's expanding multimedia approach, offering fans both a standalone, in-depth special and a blockbuster cinematic appearance for one of its most complex characters.
