Asha Bhosle, the iconic Indian playback singer whose voice defined Bollywood for nearly eight decades, has died in Mumbai at the age of 92. Her family confirmed that she passed away on Sunday after being admitted to hospital for extreme exhaustion and a chest infection.
The two-time Grammy nominee recorded more than 12,000 songs and was renowned for her versatility, embracing cabaret, western-influenced melodies, and traditional folk. Her work as a playback singer—recording tracks lip-synced by actors—made her one of India's most celebrated voices.
Tributes poured in from across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said her “extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts.” The home minister, Amit Shah, noted she left “an indelible mark not just in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Gujarati and many other languages but also in folk songs.” Bollywood actor Hema Malini called her death a “huge loss … that can never be compensated or replaced.” Composer AR Rahman said, “She lives forever with her voice and aura,” while cricketer Sachin Tendulkar thanked her for “filling our lives with warmth, grace, and unforgettable music.”
Born on 8 September 1933 into a musical family, Bhosle was the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar, revered as “India’s nightingale.” Despite early struggles, including a turbulent marriage at 16, Bhosle forged her own path. She received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2000 and two Grammy nominations.
Her talents reached western audiences through collaborations such as Bow Down Mister with Boy George in 1991, Cornershop’s tribute Brimful of Asha in 1997, and a feature on the Gorillaz album The Mountain in 2024. Beyond music, she launched the Asha’s restaurant chain in Dubai and Britain.
Reflecting on her life in a 2016 interview with the Guardian, Bhosle said: “I have faced life upfront, taken the blows head-on, never turned my back, and I am proud of all that I’ve achieved. … I’ve enjoyed my life. There has been great tragedy but also moments of great happiness. I’ve taken both in my stride and if I were to replay my life, I would do it all over again.”
