Andrew Garfield starts band, plans festival gigs

BAFTA-winning actor Andrew Garfield has started a band and is hoping to play festivals next summer. The former Spider-Man star first showed off his singing skills in 2021's tick, tick…BOOM!, and now he has caught the singing bug.

The British actor revealed: “I do have a band, we do Bugsy Malone covers. Look out for The Shangles. Look out for a group of middle-aged guys doing Bugsy Malone covers.”

Bugsy Malone is a 1976 kids musical set during the Prohibition era, where machine guns fire gobs of whipped cream.

Plans for gigs

Although no gigs have been announced, the 42-year-old teased that they are eyeing some dates in the near future and festival season better get ready. He said: “We have some plans. We have some big plans. But I can't really say it until it's official—I don't want to jinx it.”

New film role

Before then, Garfield is focusing on The Magic Faraway Tree, based on a famous series of children's fantasy novels written by Enid Blyton. Already a hit in the UK, it is about to open in the States. He shared: “A big part of the draw of doing the film is that it was an opportunity to play and be silly and not take things seriously. It’s like fantasy fulfilment.”

Garfield could be about to follow in the footsteps of Keanu Reeves, Bruce Willis and David Hasselhoff. He added: “We've all been so captured and taken over by these amazing technological developments in our culture and our society right now, but they do suck a lot of our time away from us.”

Claire Foy and Nicola Coughlan also star in the film, and it is a role that allowed Garfield to connect with nature again. He explained: “I need this essence in my life. I need more excuse to go into woods and to look at the tree bark and the ants crawling up the tree and to get lost in the magnificence of nature and the magic of it.”
