Xbox has announced that two upcoming titles will be console exclusives, marking a shift from its recent strategy of releasing major games on PlayStation. During the Xbox Games Showcase, executives confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will not be available on PlayStation consoles, despite previous releases of Xbox franchises on rival platforms.
Exclusives Confirmed
The next installment in the Gears of War series, E-Day, will skip PlayStation, even though the remaster of the original game, Gears of War: Reloaded, was released on PS5. Similarly, Clockwork Revolution, a highly anticipated title due next year, will remain exclusive to Xbox. Unlike timed exclusives such as Rise of the Tomb Raider or Final Fantasy XVI, these games will not later appear on other consoles.
Xbox CEO's Statement
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma addressed the move on X, stating: "We want people to choose XBOX because of great games and experiences. That also means giving you something that was made for XBOX. Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will be XBOX console exclusives!" This decision is a blow for PS5 gamers hoping to play the next Gears title.
Multiplatform Promises Upheld
Despite the exclusivity shift, Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty assured that previously announced multiplatform games will still release on other consoles. In an interview with Gamertag Radio, Booty explained: "We want a reason for people to get on board with Xbox... we know that exclusives are important... At the same time, we want to reward all our players that have been with us for a long time."
Booty emphasized that live service games and multiplayer titles will continue to be multiplatform. Games like Call of Duty will remain cross-platform, and Xbox's promise regarding Fable and Halo: Campaign Evolved—both confirmed for PlayStation—will be honored.
The company stated it will make platform decisions on a case-by-case basis, announcing platforms when release dates are revealed. This approach aims to balance exclusivity with rewarding player loyalty.
