CD Projekt RED has revealed over 13 minutes of gameplay from The Witcher 3's upcoming expansion, Songs of the Past. The footage was not broadcast in a single stream but was instead collated on YouTube by Dan Allen Gaming, who stitched together individual clips from the developer's RED Streams this week.
New area Letten and returning characters
The video begins with a closer look at Letten, the brand new area introduced with the DLC. It is located between Kovir and Kaedwen in the Northern Realms, north of where the main game of The Witcher 3 takes place. Letten is also the birthplace of Dandelion, the bard companion of Geralt who is set to return in the expansion.
The gameplay shows Geralt exploring part of the new area on the back of Roach. The upgraded lighting from the remastered version of The Witcher 3 is on display, showcasing the new area in an impressive way.
New character Lilla and chain weapon
Later, the footage offers a glimpse of a brand new character named Lilla, who meets with Geralt on one of the expansion's quests. It seems she will be a romanceable character, in typical Witcher style.
Towards the end of the gameplay clips, CD Projekt RED teases the new chain weapon, an iconic piece of gear from The Witcher lore that has not been seen in the games until now. It is set to be a great addition for crowd control, capable of pulling enemies in closer and even opening them up to incredible new finished animations.
Release dates and context
Songs of the Past is set to be the third expansion for The Witcher 3, arriving more than a decade after Blood and Wine seemingly capped off Geralt's adventures. It will bridge the gap between The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 4 in 2028, utilising a bunch of upgrades arriving next month as part of a free remastered update.
The Witcher 3 Remastered is set to launch on September 29, 2026, and will be free to everyone who already owns a copy of the game. Meanwhile, the Songs of the Past expansion will arrive sometime in 2027.
