The Undeclared War season 2 release schedule changes as finale airs in double bill
Undeclared War season 2 schedule change for finale double bill

The Undeclared War has returned to Channel 4 after a four-year hiatus, with season two picking up exactly where the first series left off. The Wales-filmed cyber thriller follows a team of analysts at GCHQ secretly working to ward off cyber-attacks on the UK in post-pandemic 2024.

Season two picks up the story

The drama stars Simon Pegg as Danny Patrick, the GCHQ Director of Operations. Season one ended on a cliffhanger in 2022, with satellite imagery showing an unidentified aircraft entering British airspace. Season two focuses on Danny and his wife, Barbara Patrick, played by Siân Brooke, who is ex-MI5 and now an analyst at GCHQ. Their relationship forms the emotional backbone of the story as they face personal and professional conflicts.

Speaking about the themes in season two, Simon Pegg said: "As always, we're dealing with international intrigue. Cyber warfare is the new frontline. When you watch the news and see a physical attack, an explosion or a terrorist incident, you witness the consequences. What you don't see is what's happening in cyberspace, even though the level of aggression can be comparable. That's one of the central themes of the show. There are also themes of secrecy and subterfuge, both in the work taking place on the floor of the EMC and in the personal lives of the characters. It's about what you see on the surface and what's really going on underneath."

Release schedule change

Since its release on Tuesday, July 21, The Undeclared War has been airing on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. However, it has been replaced in this week's schedule by Celebrity Hunted, meaning the penultimate and final episodes will both air as a double bill on Wednesday night.

The penultimate episode will air on Channel 4 at 9pm on Wednesday, August 5, followed by the finale at 10pm. A synopsis for the penultimate episode reads: "Barbara comes under Charlie’s scrutiny as tragedy strikes GCHQ. Danny, Saara and Roz work together in an attempt to help Vadim escape. Danny makes an earth-shattering discovery." The final instalment teases: "Danny confronts Barbara and puts everything on the line in order to bring the truth to life. Roz and the team must race against the clock to find out what the malware is searching for."
