The Witcher 4 release year confirmed as DLC prepares for Gamescom

CD Projekt has confirmed that The Witcher 4 will launch in 2028, as the studio prepares to showcase new DLC for The Witcher 3 at Gamescom this week.

Gamescom showcase

The upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3, titled Songs Of The Past, will be shown at Gamescom. Alongside a trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live, the DLC will be demonstrated on the showroom floor, though CD Projekt has not specified whether attendees will be able to play it or simply watch.

The presence of the DLC suggested that The Witcher 4 would not appear at the event, and CD Projekt has now confirmed this to be the case while announcing the game's release year via a tweet from Geoff Keighley.

Release year announcement

In a video clip shared on the official Witcher X account, CD Projekt's joint CEO Michał Nowakowski described The Witcher 4, which begins a new saga with Geralt's adopted daughter in the lead role, as 'our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date.'

Nowakowski announced that the goal is to have the game out in 2028. 'I know it's a bit of a wait and you'd love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait,' he added.

Release window and DLC details

2028 was always considered the most sensible estimate for The Witcher 4's release. Last year, CD Projekt indicated the game could launch as early as 2027 but did not commit to that date. Even now, 2028 is only the target window, leaving room for a launch late in the year or even a delay into 2029.

This supports theories that the new Witcher 3 DLC will act as a story bridge to The Witcher 4, as releasing an expansion so long after the original game is unusual. While the DLC lacks an exact date, it is scheduled for 2027, and series protagonist Geralt will remain the focus.

Upcoming alternative

For those waiting, another Witcher-like game, The Blood Of Dawnwalker, launches next week on September 3. It is being developed by former CD Projekt staff, including Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, co-director on The Witcher 3, who left in 2022 to found Rebel Wolves. The game features a human/vampire hybrid protagonist with 30 days to save his family, combining sword combat and vampire powers such as teleportation.
