Switch Sports Resort Review: 12 Fun Motion Control Sports

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort delivers 12 motion-controlled sports for the Switch 2, reviving the classic Wii Sports formula with a sunny island setting. The game is set on a fantasy resort called Wuhu and includes both familiar favorites and new additions, offering a family-friendly package ahead of the holiday season.

Returning Classics and New Additions

Golf, bowling, tennis, and boxing return from the original Wii Sports, with baseball notably absent. These games play similarly to their predecessors but now use the Switch's JoyCon 2 controllers instead of the older Wii remotes.

New sports include table tennis, volleyball, basketball, thumb wrestling, skateboarding, power cruising, and prop plane. Archery also makes an appearance, requiring players to pull their arms apart while holding two controllers to fire an arrow.

Mixed Results in New Sports

Some new events work well. Thumb wrestling combines motion tracking with button bashing, while archery feels satisfying. However, basketball struggles with awkward court movement, and the skateboarding mechanic feels like an attempt to justify the JoyCon 2's mouse controls.

The game retains the physical rivalry that made Wii Sports popular, with simplified menus allowing quick matches against family members. Online play is also available, including a Pro League where players start at rank E and climb by winning, plus a Casual Online Play mode that doesn't record wins or losses.

Customization and Progression

Players can unlock items and clothing for their Sportsmate or Mii characters. Spocco Points, earned in both online and offline play, can be redeemed at the Item Center for clothing, equipment, hairstyles, and more. The center rotates items weekly and monthly.

Island Crown mode gives each discipline a champion to beat for a single-player goal. Overall, the game offers plenty of sports, though some controls feel off. Verdict: 3.5/5.
