Super Mario Bros Wonder's Bellabel Park Expansion Elevates Switch 2 Experience
Nintendo has unveiled its most enticing Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade yet with the Meetup in Bellabel Park expansion for Super Mario Bros Wonder. This add-on pack transforms the multiplayer experience while offering substantial new content for solo players, priced at £16.99 or $19.99.
A New Focus on Multiplayer and Solo Adventures
Unlike the original game's co-op mode, which felt like an afterthought, Meetup in Bellabel Park adopts a Mario Party-inspired approach. It features a diverse collection of multiplayer mini-games, including both cooperative and versus modes. Players can engage in activities like feeding baby Yoshis or participating in creative challenges locally with up to four players.
However, the expansion surprises with significant single-player content. It introduces seven new stages starring the Koopalings, offering inventive boss battles that hint at the potential of a future sequel. These stages are integrated across the Flower Kingdom, providing a fresh campaign where players join the Toad Brigade to defeat each Koopaling.
Enhanced Gameplay and Characters
The expansion adds Rosalina and Luma as playable characters, marking Rosalina's debut in 2D Mario platforming. While her mechanics align with other characters, her inclusion brings nostalgic appeal, especially with Luma enabling a co-op style reminiscent of Super Mario Galaxy. New power-ups, such as the Flower Suit that shoots floating petals, further enrich gameplay.
For solo enthusiasts, the expansion includes Toad Brigade training challenges and a flower-growing meta-game that allows customization of Bellabel Park's aesthetics. This blend of content ensures that both multiplayer fans and those preferring solitary play find value.
Multiplayer Mini-Games: A Mixed Bag with Highlights
The mini-games are categorized into online and local play, with varying quality. Standouts include Build Away: Donut Block Maker, where players construct platforms in real-time using controller or mouse controls, evoking Super Mario Maker vibes. Another favorite is Look Out Bob-omb Relay, a tense co-op game that involves passing a live bomb through challenging stages.
Versus modes, such as coin collection or fruit-eating contests, offer chaotic fun but may not suit all players' tastes. Despite this, Nintendo provides a generous selection, ensuring groups can find enjoyable options.
Technical Improvements and Value
Critically, this upgrade avoids forcing Switch 2-specific features like mouse controls or the camera, a pitfall seen in other expansions. This makes it more accessible and user-friendly. Overall, Meetup in Bellabel Park stands out as Nintendo's most generous Switch 2 Edition upgrade, combining multiplayer innovation with solo content to create a compelling package that redefines the 2D Mario experience.
