Star Wars Zero Company, a turn-based tactics RPG from developer Bit Reactor, is shaping up to be a perfect blend of the Star Wars universe and the tactical genre, according to a recent preview. The game casts players as Hawks, leader of a mercenary squad, and offers a single-player experience that combines strategic combat with character-driven storytelling.
Clone Wars Era Setting and Quick Pacing
Set during key years of the Clone Wars era, the game quickly immerses players in familiar tactical overhead action. The tutorial, framed as a heist to steal a data disc, teaches basics like attacking from afar, taking cover, and setting up overwatch cones, all while fighting droids. Despite initial skepticism about how a strategy game could capture the Star Wars vibe, the tutorial convinced the previewer that the story and characters are worthy of the wider canon.
Customizable Squad and Permadeath
Players can recruit and upgrade a team of operators, customizing their appearance, weapons, and Focus Points for class-specific abilities. The game recommends playing with permadeath on, a feature borrowed from the XCOM franchise that adds emotional weight. The previewer notes that losing a member would be crushing, highlighting the investment in the squad.
Standout Mission: No Clone Left Behind
One mission, "No Clone Left Behind," stood out, requiring the rescue of an injured clone while fending off Separatist forces. This optional mission tested tactical skills and strengthened bonds with characters like Tricks, a Clone Trooper sergeant. The previewer praised the game's ability to mix tactical gameplay with emotional story elements, something the XCOM games often lacked.
Star Wars Zero Company shares many mechanical similarities with XCOM 2, but Bit Reactor, a studio comprised of former Firaxis creatives, builds upon that foundation. The game is scheduled to launch on PS5, Xbox, and PC on August 27, 2026.
