Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, may have accidentally confirmed that the beloved video game The Simpsons: Hit & Run is making a comeback. During a panel at the recent D23 event, Groening appeared to let slip that the original game is returning in some form, much to the delight of fans.
Fan Favorite Game May See a Return
Released in 2003, The Simpsons: Hit & Run is widely considered the franchise's best video game, often compared to Grand Theft Auto. Fans have long campaigned for a remaster or remake, with one fan even recreating the first level singlehandedly in 2021.
At the D23 panel, which focused on the future of The Simpsons and included a teaser for the upcoming sequel The New Simpsons Movie, an audience member asked about the possibility of a second Hit & Run. Showrunner Matt Selman responded that a sequel would 'be a treat,' but it was Groening who added, 'I think the original game is coming back in some form.'
Accidental Revelation or Slip of the Tongue?
Selman quickly followed up with 'Or… not,' suggesting Groening may have revealed more than intended. Groening then shifted to discussing another game, The Simpsons: Road Rage, and its legal issues with Sega over similarities to Crazy Taxi.
Despite the apparent slip, no official statement has been made to confirm or deny plans for a Hit & Run remaster. If the game does return, it would mean the licensing issues that have prevented re-releases for years have been resolved.
Potential Studio Involvement
Hit & Run was developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Vivendi Games. Both companies were later acquired by Activision, but former Radical staff revived the studio as New Radical Games earlier this year. The studio's website highlights Hit & Run as an example of their best work, leading to speculation that they could be involved in a remaster.
While nothing is confirmed, the possibility of a Hit & Run return has generated significant buzz among fans, who have waited over two decades for the game to make a comeback.
