Red Bull's limited-edition Summer Edition Citrus Zest drink, priced at £1.80 for a 250ml can, proved more enjoyable when mixed with tequila and fresh lime at home, according to a taste test.
A Refreshing Can with a Sour Edge
The drink, which combines Japanese sudachi with lime, pomelo and notes of citrus peel, was refreshing straight from the can, with a sharp, slightly sour taste rather than being overly sweet. The initial tasting happened around 11am, but the citrus flavour suggested potential for mixing.
Home Mixing with Tequila and Lime
Instead of heading out for after-work drinks, the tester filled a glass with ice, added a measure of tequila, poured in the Citrus Zest, and finished with a slice of fresh lime. The result was incredibly simple, but preferred to drinking the can on its own.
The fresh lime brought out more of the citrus flavour, while the tequila worked surprisingly well with the slightly sour taste. Served properly cold over ice, it felt like something one could easily order while out.
Availability and Pricing
The Red Bull Summer Edition Citrus Zest launched earlier this year and is available in both original and sugar-free versions. A 250ml can has a recommended price of £1.80, while larger 355ml and 473ml cans have RRPs of £2.20 and £2.75 respectively. A four-pack of 250ml cans is £5.75.
Alcohol and energy drinks should be consumed with care, as caffeine can make people feel more alert without reducing the effects of alcohol, so moderation is important. While this homemade drink might not replace going out for Thursday drinks altogether, it took less than a minute to make at home, and the tester said they will definitely be having it this way again.
