A new Prime Video series is so grim one television critic has labelled it "insane, sick and twisted" - only to admit it makes "fascinating" viewing too. That's the opinion of reviewer, Alex Nicola, who went on to discuss what makes the true crime documentary in question so compelling. "It's one of the most insane I have ever seen," he began in a TikTok video.
The Two-Part Documentary
Alex went on to reveal that the two-part production is "disturbingly" titled 'An Amputation Obsession: The Monster And The Surgeon'. Describing the plot, he continued: "At the centre of it is Neil Hopper, who was a vascular surgeon at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.
"He obviously performed amputation at operations, but in 2019 he sadly became a patient himself and lost both of his legs below the knee after what he claimed was a devastating case of sepsis." However, it would later emerge that not everything was as it seemed.
An Inspirational Figure
According to Alex, Hopper became an "incredibly inspirational figure" appearing on TV shows such as ITV's This Morning to talk about his ordeal, before returning to work as a surgeon after just six months. "Except that was not the real story," he added.
Resisting spoiling things for viewers, Alex said things get "very, very dark" once the tale begins to unravel. "It's one of those documentaries that opens the door to some very dark corners of the internet that nobody should ever be in," he added.
Reaction and Synopsis
Alex closed: "I was sat with my mouth open for two hours... it's like every 10 minutes the story gets stranger and stranger. You need to drop whatever you are doing and go watch this right now."

Writing in response to Alex's clip, one TikTok user exclaimed: "Going to watch this, but preparing myself!" A second person recalled: "I remember this... living in Cornwall at the time." A third looked back: "Oh my God the way I remember reading this on the news." While a fourth said: "I'm really not sure how I feel about this story. He obviously has a mental health disorder. He was apparently a brilliant doctor. It all seems rather sad."
