Overwatch Steam Records Smashed After Major Reboot

Blizzard Entertainment's soft-reboot of Overwatch, which dropped the '2' from its name and introduced five new heroes alongside a UI overhaul, has seen a massive surge in player numbers. On Steam alone, the game hit a record 160,000 concurrent players, smashing its previous record of 75,000 set when it first launched on the platform in 2023.

The actual player count is likely much higher, as figures from PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Battle.net are not included. The influx was so large that server queues returned for the first time since the game's early days. Twitch viewership also peaked at 207,000.

Social media has been flooded with praise. One player wrote: 'Overwatch is so friggin back,' while another said: 'Played Overwatch for 14 hours today, the game is that damn good.' A third added: 'New Overwatch is the most fun I’ve had playing an FPS in years.'

The five new heroes—including Emre, who plays like Master Chief, and Domina with her laser weapon—have been well-received for their distinct playstyles without breaking the game's balance. Time will tell if the momentum can be sustained, but early signs in 2026 are promising.
