Netflix's new sci-fi thriller, Human Vapor, is captivating viewers just days after its release, with fans arguing it deserves more attention than the latest Harlan Coben adaptation, I Will Find You. The series, a reboot of Toho's legendary film of the same name, combines sci-fi, mystery, and conspiracy elements.
Plot and Premise
The story begins when a guest commentator swells and explodes on live TV in an unprecedented crime, shocking the world. Behind the murder is a man who vanishes into thin air: the Human Vapor. This enigmatic figure announces and executes targeted assassinations, evading capture and escalating nationwide terror with each attack.
The series was written by Yeon Sang-ho, known for the cult hit Train to Busan, who also served as showrunner. It is a collaboration between top Japanese and Korean creators, rebooting Toho's original story with a new narrative.
Critical Reception and Fan Reactions
Despite not yet landing a spot in Netflix's top 10 most-watched series, Human Vapor boasts a marginally better IMDB rating than I Will Find You. It has not received enough professional reviews for a Rotten Tomatoes score, but fans are already praising it.
One Reddit user posted: "I just completed this series!! Absolute gem of a series. I am amazed to see literally no one mentioning this!!! It is rare to get this good of a series. Got too hooked and binged it in one night." They added: "It was solid from start to finish. Every department has done a solid job on their work (acting, VFX, music, cinematography etc). There is literally no bad episode in this one. All 8 episodes are just that good. My favourite is definitely ep 2 (10/10). Guys give this a try, you won't be disappointed. A solid - 9/10 from my side. Close to perfection."
Another fan agreed: "Absolutely phenomenal, one of best in this year! Human Vapor was riveting! This conspiracy mystery thriller had substantive depth and it featured nuanced complicated characters. What an excellent cross collaboration of Korean and Japanese creative minds. One of my favourite new shows of the year. I really hope Netflix keeps doing collaboration with Toho and makes more bangers like this one!"
