Fans of Death in Paradise missing their fix from Saint Marie can fill the gap with another popular crime series. My Life is Murder – starring Xena: Warrior Princess' Lucy Lawless – is back for a fifth series and fans of the BBC detective drama will love it.
The Australian-New Zealand crime show started in 2019 and sees Lucy, who found fame as Xena in the 1990s, star as "the fearless and brilliantly unapologetic private detective, Alexa Crowe".
It has been a hit since it began and now, following its transmission on U&Alibi, My Life is Murder series five is available on DVD and digital, courtesy of Acorn Media International.
Eight new cases
The new series is comprised of eight "thrilling" new cases featuring dangerous villains that only Alexa can catch, but as always, she takes her friends and family along for the ride as she investigates mysteries.
The team includes tech whizz Madison, played by Ebony Vagulans, who helps Alexa with many tricky situations, and café owner Reuben, who is played by Joe Naufahu from Game of Thrones and Ghost in the Shell.
Shortland Street's Rawiri Jobe plays Detective Harry, one of Alexa's allies, while Grey's Anatomy star Martin Henderson stars as her "bad boy" brother Will.
Plot details
According to a synopsis, when he "drops by with a dilemma things are about to get complicated, and her cantankerous cat Chowder continues to stir up trouble in his own mischievous way".
"The new series sees Alexa dive headfirst into a world of puzzling crime, from shady aquariums and elite cheerleading squads to creepy dolls and deadly island getaways," the synopsis goes on. "As buried secrets resurface, justice is never quite as simple as it seems, but one thing is certain – Alexa isn't backing down."
Personal life in spotlight
However, it seems that catching killers isn't the detective's only unfinished business, with Alexa's private life also in the spotlight in the new episodes.
The description teases that a reunion with her former police partner Jesse (who is played by Lucy's former Xena co-star Craig Parker) "leaves the headstrong sleuth questioning herself: could he be the one that got away?"
