Martin Kemp has revealed that a story he shared with pub-goers in Ireland about getting naked didn't go down as well as he hoped. The Spandau Ballet star was filming a new Channel 4 series, Martin and Roman's Irish Road Trip, with his son, The One Show presenter Roman Kemp, as they travelled the Emerald Isle to 'experience Ireland's legends, landscapes and locals'.
Pub story draws polite laughs
Discussing his adventures with Radio Times, Martin recounted how one night he told a tale from his band days in a pub, but it only received polite laughter. 'The Irish do love a yarn,' he said. 'We walked into a pub one night, and they were all taking it in turns to get up and tell a story. I got up and told one about being on tour with Spandau – you'll have to watch the show to hear it, but it ends up with me wearing no clothes.'
'I don't think it went down very well, but they laughed politely.'
Series explores Ireland's highlights
The three-part series, co-produced by Tourism Ireland and Rock Oyster Media, sees the pair start in Cork, where they explore Spike Island's history, unravel stone circle mysteries, and try kayaking. In the next episode, they head to Meath and Dublin, visiting the Hill of Tara, Slane Castle, and the Dublin Mountains. The final episode takes them to Northern Ireland, where they learn about the Causeway Coast and attend the Derry Halloween festival.
Positive impressions
Roman described Ireland as 'an amazing place' after filming, while Martin added: 'I know from spending time there, it is such a beautiful place and the people are so lovely. If you are going to go anywhere, with Ireland you can't go far wrong.'
