Lego Marvel Games Shelved for Warner Bros. IP, Claims Leaker

Lego Marvel games have reportedly been put on hold indefinitely, and the next Lego video game will instead be based on a major Warner Bros. IP that isn't Harry Potter, according to a Lego leaker. The follow-up to this year's Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight is apparently not going to be Harry Potter, leaving fans wondering what will take its place.

Longer Gaps Between Releases

In the Xbox 360 era, two or even three Lego movie games were released annually, as games were quicker to produce. In recent years, the gap between releases has widened significantly. Before Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight, the last new game was Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in 2022, suggesting the next one might not arrive until around 2030.

A Harry Potter game has been rumoured for a long time, but the leaker claims that both it and Marvel are missing out on the next slot. The information comes from a Lego leaker, not a video game insider, who asserts that all Lego Marvel games are 'on hold for the unforeseeable future.' The leaker also claims the next Lego game will be a 'major Warner Bros. IP' that isn't Harry Potter.

Warner Bros. Focus

Warner Bros., a large company owning extensive IP, is a target for acquisition by Paramount Skydance, though the deal isn't certain. Gaming has become a smaller part of Warner's business, but a recent financial report highlighted Hogwarts Legacy 2 and praised Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight as the most critically acclaimed Lego movie game so far.

This suggests Warner Bros. remains interested in Lego games, though making games based on Marvel—arch rivals of DC Comics, which Warner owns—was always somewhat odd. When games could be produced quickly, it made sense for both parties, but with four-year development cycles, using IP they don't own becomes less practical.

What Could Be Next?

The leaker reportedly rules out both Harry Potter and Dune as the next game, leaving possibilities like another Batman game or another DC Comics property. Other guesses include Lego Mad Max, Lego Looney Tunes, or even Lego Clockwork Orange, though the latter seems unlikely for a young audience.

Lord of the Rings might seem an obvious choice, but it's unclear if Warner Bros. still holds the rights, which could belong to Amazon or Embracer Group. This uncertainty suggests it's probably not that either, leading back to DC Comics. With the film Man of Tomorrow due next July, a Superman game equivalent to Legacy Of The Dark Knight is possible, though 2030 would be too late for a tie-in.
