Sony has delayed God of War Laufey to May 20, 2027, moving it out of a crowded February window while still keeping it ahead of the planned end of physical PlayStation 5 games after 2027.
The game was previously set for a February 16 launch, with pre-orders having opened a couple of months ago. Developer Santa Monica Studio announced the change without offering a detailed reason, suggesting only that the game needs additional polish.
Why the release date moved
In a post on X, the studio said: “Since the reveal of God Of War Laufey in June, we’ve been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye’s journey through the Everywhen. We don’t take for granted the trust placed in our studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans. With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to delay God Of War Laufey’s release to May 20, 2027.”
The statement added: “We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.”
Less competition in May
The original February slot would have put God of War Laufey against Microsoft’s Fable, due a week later, as well as remakes of the original Tomb Raider and Persona 4. May is currently quieter, though the game will now launch on the same day as the Persona 4 remake’s Switch 2 version.
Online reactions have been largely relaxed, with many telling Santa Monica to take the time needed to make the game as good as it can be.
Impact on Sony's 2027 lineup
The delay widens the gap between Sony’s planned PlayStation 5 exclusives for 2027. Originally, God of War Laufey would have arrived one month after Until Dawn 2, which remains scheduled for January 28. Sony also plans to publish Chinese action game Daba: Land Of Water Scar and the Kena: Bridge Of Spirits sequel next year, though neither has an exact release date.
Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is believed to be aiming for 2027, although that has never been confirmed. It was also recently rumoured that Days Gone studio Sony Bend is preparing to reveal a new game.
