Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is shaping up to be the most ambitious entry in the series yet, blending political intrigue and relationship dynamics from Three Houses with the tactical depth of Engage. After playing through the first five chapters, the game already feels like five different games in one.
A Story of Five Threads
Set in the decayed future where the Dagdan Empire faces destruction, the game opens with an epic framing device: you create your own legendary hero charged with stopping evil forces. The prologue serves as a tutorial, introducing turn-based battles with an overpowered warrior. The main story, however, takes place five years earlier, during a happier period of Dagison's history, where four heroes—Cai, Theodora, Leda, and Dietrich—assemble at The Capital to compete in the Heroic Games.
Players can switch between these parallel stories between big events. For the preview, the focus was on Cai, a farm boy traveling to Dagison to learn about his family history, accompanied by childhood friends Peter and Tialla. His story is a quintessential hero's journey, well-suited to ground new players in a world of time travel and mythical mounts.
New Blaze Art Attacks
Fortune's Weave introduces Blaze Art attacks, similar to Combat Arts but depleting health instead of weapon durability. These attacks are exclusive to the four main heroes (plus your custom protagonist), allowing for powerful moves like destroying foes on five grids at once or teleporting across the battlefield. While they might seem overpowered, they're best used as a last-ditch tactic.
The game also brings back many features from Three Houses, including side tasks, gift-giving to recruit warriors, and clash battles in dungeons. For players who prefer pure tactics, options like Auto mode for dungeon battles and cut scene skipping are available.
Minor Grievances
Some dungeons, particularly caves outside the city, appear visually bland, as do the talking-head sections for bond conversations at the inn. These are minor cuts in an otherwise ambitious package.
With the story spanning five parallel narratives and new tactical tweaks, Fortune's Weave feels like a grand debut for Fire Emblem on Nintendo Switch 2. The game launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17, 2026.
