Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has confirmed on X that she has played a chunk of The Elder Scrolls 6 in a 'live playthrough', and she's also teased what the subtitle and probably setting will be.
Late last night, Sharma tweeted, "Live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI: ******** this morning. The scale and grandeur are incredible. The story is even greater."
What Does 'Live Playthrough' Mean?
The phrase 'live playthrough' has thrown a few gamers, especially given there was no such footage broadcast of the game. We're still very much in the dark when it comes to what The Elder Scrolls 6 will actually look like to play.
In this case, the term 'live playthrough' refers to the fact that the game was being played in a 'live build', which means it's the version of the game that's most up to date and working internally. Sadly, there's no livestream of The Elder Scrolls 6 scheduled for the public right now.
Subtitle Speculation
The other part of Sharma's tweet that's worth taking note of is the starred out subtitle. Bethesda Game Studios also drew attention to this redacted name, replying to Sharma with: "It was great being able to show you ********. Thank you for the kind words and a wonderful visit."
Both of the posts use the same number of asterisks to redact the subtitle – eight, to be exact. This has led fans to speculate what the subtitle could be, and it properly narrows down the possibilities.
Elder Scrolls subtitles have tended to be their regional setting. Skyrim and Morrowind are the two biggest examples with Oblivion bucking the trend slightly given it was set in Cyrodil, although a large chunk of it was set in the hellscape of Oblivion too.
Taking a look at a map of Tamriel, there are only two regions that also have eight letters in their name – High Rock and Elsweyer.
High Rock has long since been rumoured to be the location of the next Elder Scrolls with its rocky, mountainous terrain to the north west of Tamriel thought to be what was teased during the short teaser trailer back in 2018. However, it of course has a space in between the two words, which throws a spanner in the redacted tease from Sharma and Bethesda.
Elsweyer is also a contender, with the deserted area located in the far south of Tamriel. It's home to the Khajit, although the desert does some to be a far cry from the terrain we saw in that initial teaser.
Fan Favourites and Insider Hints
Of course, the game's subtitle could be completely unrelated to its setting, like the very first two Elder Scrolls games, Daggerfall and Arena. Over on the Elder Scrolls subreddit, gamers are speculating what it could be with 'Sentinel' and 'Dominion' currently the two fan favourites.
Michael Kirkbride, a veteran game developer who worked at Bethesda Softworks between 1996 and 2000, added fuel to the fire by claiming that the guess of 'Sentinel' is correct.
Kirkbride hasn't worked at Bethesda in over two decades, but it stands to reason that given he's a long-standing name in the industry, he could still have contacts at the studio and insider knowledge of Bethesda's plans for Elder Scrolls 6.
For now though, it looks like we're still in the dark about where The Elder Scrolls 6 will officially be set. Maybe we'll finally find out more at Gamescom in a couple of weeks…
