EA Sports FC 27 hands-on: A more beautiful game with big changes
EA Sports FC 27 hands-on: A more beautiful game

EA Sports FC 27 is set to deliver significant improvements over its predecessor, with a new hub area called The Grounds, a revamped gameplay system, and a more dynamic Career Mode. Hands-on time with the game revealed that these changes are not just superficial but fundamental, addressing long-standing issues in the franchise.

The Grounds: A New Social Hub

The headline addition to FC 27 is The Grounds, a hub area where players can wander around solo or with friends. Designed to celebrate global grassroots football culture, it offers a variety of casual, online football-related games. The Grounds features three distinct areas modeled on the urban football environments of the UK, Argentina, and France, and provides a new home for the existing Clubs mode.

Exploring The Grounds was a pleasant surprise, unlike the brash and Americanized The City in NBA 2K. It is filled with minigames, including 2v2 and 3v3 matches with objectives, a murderball-inspired balloon game, and a Clubhouse for traditional Clubs play. Character upgrades are available through Amps, which can be earned via challenges or purchased.

Gameplay Overhaul

FC 27 goes further than FC 26 in tinkering with gameplay fundamentals. Defensive interceptions have been completely rebuilt to eliminate unrealistic ricochets, as design director Kantcho Doskov explained: 'We had to completely strip out the existing system for interceptions and build a new one from scratch. And we spent the last six months doing that.'

Responsiveness has been improved, with off-the-ball movement and trigger-runs tweaked. The crossing system has been revamped to focus on whipping dangerous balls into the danger zone. Forward AI now stays onside better, while defensive AI has been dialed down, giving players more control. Free kicks and corners have also been changed, and top players can now dribble while off-balance, reminiscent of Lionel Messi.

Career Mode Revamp

Career Mode receives a major overhaul with dynamic OVRs, which change based on fitness, form, and happiness. This encourages more active management, as Pete O'Donnell, Career Mode game director, noted: 'We set it out to basically make every match an interesting decision.'

The transfer system, dubbed 'Transfers 2.0', now includes more stages, such as agreeing personal terms and negotiating with clubs. It incorporates data from Transfer Room and introduces a new stat, xTV (Expected Transfer Value), to help generate realistic bids. Additionally, 25 new Unexpected Events have been added, bringing the total to 60, and press conferences will now require decisions that can please or annoy players.

FUT Additions

FUT, the popular card-based mode, will feature a FUT Gallery, a trophy room tracking all owned players and sets. Single-player FUT events, such as the road to the Champions League final, will be added. The SBC system has been modernized, and the number of play styles has been capped at three to address stalemates in top-level teams.

Overall, FC 27 looks set to be a significant improvement, with cleaned-up gameplay and the appealing new Grounds hub. The game is scheduled for release on 25th September 2026, on multiple platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
