Gary Windass has vowed to "tell the truth" about the murder of Theo Silverton in Sunday night's episode of Coronation Street, leaving fans worried he could be framed for the entire crime.
The builder, played by Mike North since 2008, became entangled in the death of scaffolder Theo (James Cartwright) after a flashback earlier this year revealed Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) had struck him with a pipe and pushed him from scaffolding, following months of Theo abusing her best friend Todd Grimshaw.
Instead of involving her partner DC Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) for fear of damaging his career, Sarah enlisted her ex-boyfriend Gary to hide the murder weapon, even after she was charged and imprisoned for murder.
Gary's confession
Kit has been pressuring Gary to hand himself in, and at the end of the weekend's episode, Gary spoke to solicitor Adam Barlow and confessed everything. Adam asked, "What the hell were you both thinking?" Gary explained, "Well, we weren't, just wanted to get your view on the situation." Adam replied: "Option one, you hand yourself in, play dumb about the scaffold pole and play dumb about Sarah not contacting the police. Option two, pray Kit is bluffing."
Adam warned that if police could prove Gary concealed the murder weapon, he could face up to four years in prison, though it would corroborate Sarah's claim of self-defence.
Fans fear a frame-up
Later, while Sarah was on the phone to Kit from her cell, DS Lisa Swain hovered in the background and demanded to know what they were discussing. They had been talking about Sarah's daughter Bethany's visit, during which she revealed Gary's plan to confess.
Meanwhile, Gary's wife Maria Sutherland (Samia Ghadie) is desperate for a plan, especially since she initially lied to police about wiped CCTV footage at the builder's yard. After waving off a client, Maria received a text from Gary; her face fell as she read it, and moments later, Gary sat before DS Swain. She asked, "Gary, what's this all about?" He replied: "To tell the truth."
Reacting to the possibility of Gary being imprisoned, one fan wrote on X: "bloody hell! I hope Sarah doesn't go along with Kit framing Gary for Theo's murder!" Another said: "Gary Windass is a brilliant character thanks to Mikey North," while a third raged: "Kit is a prick, how dare he do that to Gary, blackmailing bent copper! #Corrie Gary should take him down with him if Kit is gonna play that game!"
